The Garage, Heathfield Terrace, W4

Conversion of the garage into a gym and home office.
Although without architectural merit the conservation area meant the outward appearance of a garage from the rear lane had to be preserved.

Internally the admin space is on a mezzanine level for separation from the main gym activity.  The height allows for generous storage below the platform.

It was important for the new building to be open and flexible to different potential uses in the future and linked strongly to the garden.  Sliding wooden slat screens provided a barrier to the gym from the garden when required.  The brise soleil helps link the interior and exterior, echoing the house extension [see separate Heathfield Terrace built scheme].  The glazing faces north and the reflective metal fins on the brise were turned the opposite way from normal functioning as a shade to give a little solar reflection from the garage front side.  Extensive alterations had already been completed on the house and there was some continuity of treatment.   South light internally was achieved with a generous rooflight over the mezzanine which also gave more headroom.
