Ground Floor Remodelling and Roof Conversion

A two phase project for a four bedroom semi-detached family house :

[i] ground floor remodelling
The original rear bathroom, kitchen and rear lounge were opened up and combined into one split-level family space for kitchen area and dining, with a sitting area at a lower level, opening out, west-facing, onto the garden.

Structural steel has been left exposed internally, and insulated externally with zinc cladding. The original lean-to roof form has been demolished but echoed and mirrored to create a simple gable roof, half-glazed adjacent to the main house block to ensure maximum natural light to the kitchen/dining mezzanine.

A high-level south-facing window into the kitchen looks into a side passage between properties but gives additional light to the inner kitchen/dining area.

[ii] roof conversion into bedroom with en suite shower/wc
Maximum ceiling height within planning laws has been maintained, to the ridge, giving almost 3m headroom inside. The clients enjoy waking up with the sun so eschew any shading.

The main structure is a steel cube, glazed on two-and-a-half elevations, and maintains the original hip roof profile to the front elevation by not encroaching beyond the ridge.

The access stairs are in a single flight footprint to maximise room size. The front gable over the west-facing bay windows have been glazed exploiting the full floor available down to the eaves. At the rear sliding doors onto a balcony look out east across London to Canary Wharf, about 15 miles away.
