Peterborough Road, SW6

New house project on four floors including a lower ground floor a common feature of nearby commercial buildings] in a vibrant mixed-development commercial, residential and industrial area of Fulham London, at the corner of Hugon Rd, on a 130m2, 7m wide site; adjacent there is a 1930′s cuboid two-storey commercial building c.9m high with carefully detailed brickwork on one side and 21st century flats and maisonettes masquerading as houses under 5m to eaves and 7m to ridge on the other southeastern flank.

The entrance is located centrally on the northwest side at the end of a ramp adjacent to the commercial building, and the house is staggered in plan narrowing towards the rear to allow a one metre gap from a boundary wall with its neighbour. The front door location gives direct access to all interior areas and the staircase.

The sitting room to the front southwest elevation has french doors onto a Brooklyn NY-style stoop behind a protective wall tapering from a metre high. Maximum direct natural light to all central areas especially on the lower floor is achieved with glass floors and ceilings, external where possible.

The 30m2 rear courtyard garden is accessed from the lower ground floor. The kitchen has east/southerly light. The lower ground floor can be completely separate from the ground floor above but would preferably form the lower part of a mezzanine, double-height space in combination with the upper ground floor.

Requirements included 4 bedrooms with an additional two infant sleeping areas off the master bedroom which was positioned on the top floor with an ensuite bathroom and front-facing southwest balcony.

The aesthetic aim was to offer the visual calm of white stucco and clean geometry in the context of the wide range of varied brickwork surrounding the house on all sides. The result is a clear definition of distinctiveness between buildings, each with its own merits, separating conflicting statements.

Unfortunately so far project not started due to failure of land purchase.
